Dog's Welcome - It's Your Church!
If you live in Vermont or plan to visit soon, you won't want to miss The Dog Chapel at 143 Parks Road in St. Johnsbury.
Built by Artist Stephen Huneck, in honor or his dogs, who he credits with helping him recover from a life-threatening illness. The Dog Chapel has stained-glass windows and its walls are covered with memorials, written on scraps of paper and posted for prayer. There are four pews for people and animals. The Dog Chapel is open from 10:00AM - 5:00PM, Monday through Friday and from 11:00AM - 4:00PM on Sundays.

What do Gold Fish and Green Peas Have in common?
Not much if your fish is feeling perky, but if your gold fish gets a bit lethargic, a temporary diet of fresh or frozen green peas can be a great relief. The problem is most likely that your gold fish is constipated. Stop feeding him his regular food and put one or two peas, crushed between your finger and thumb into his (her?) bowl. Relief will be easy to see and you can then return to normal feeding.

Calgary, Alberta is the third largest municipality in Canada and the human population is competing for territory formerly claimed by the animals.
Whatever the reason that legislators in those communities have chosen to invest taxpayer dollars in saving the lives of these animals we say, Thank You! You are Blessing the Animals.

Man's Humanity is Showing
A new walkway has been built across Highway #1 between Banff and Calgary, strictly for animals. To stop the deadly accidents that were occurring in spots where the animals have traveled for centuries, a concrete walk way spans the Interstate. Used mostly by Elk, the walkway is a fascinating sight as animals of may species complete their "unnatural crossing" as safely and efficiently as possible.
Way farther south in Florida - underground passage ways have been built beneath the east to west highway called Alligator Alley, at the southern tip of the State, in an effort to save the lives of endangered Florida panthers.

Unplug Your Shredder!
Veterinarians are reporting a rash of serious injuries caused by Home Office paper shredders. If your shredder can demolish a CD, imagine what it can do to various animal body parts. To avoid really unpleasant accidents, please unplug your shredder when you are through using it, cover it if possible, and keep your animals out of the room while you are using it. Their healthy curiosity provides for much of our joy in sharing our homes with our pets, however we are responsible for keeping them safe when they go too far.

How Old is Your Cat, Really?
Have you ever wondered how old your cat is in human years?
According to Your Cat magazine, a publication of IAMS pet foods, cats do not have quite as linear an aging pattern as dogs do.
At the end of one year, your cat is truly a teen-ager -- the equivalent of 16 human years. At two, your cat is 21; at 3, 25; at 8, 46; at 10, 54; at 15, 74 and at 20, 94.
It may be time to really give your cat the respect it has always felt it deserved!

You can take one extra step right now to assure that anyone who rescues your pet can easily find you
At www.awolpet.com, you may register your animal and provide all the ways there are to reach you and an alternatecare giver. The information you post with AWOLPET is much broader than that usually available on an animal collar or tag. Then add this web address: www.awolpet.com to your pet's tag.
And - if you find someone else's pet, check with this Web site to see if it is registered by its owner. AWOLPET also lists Veterinarians by State who are willing to help identify pets by microchip.

Yes, Cat's do need collars...
Meet Lapis, a black and white cat that disappeared from her home in Boulder, Colorado. Her owner hunted for her frantically, put ads in the local papers, posted signs in the neighborhood but no one had seen Lapis - and no wonder.
 |
David Grant rescued Lapis from a tree a few weeks later in Champagne Landing, Yukon Territory (population 15), 3,000 miles from home. The best guess is that Lapis climbed into a truck or trailer and took off on an unplanned adventure. Fortunately, her collar traveled with her and she eventually found her way home.

A Good Shiver is Very Healing!
Brrr...during winter hibernation, bears lose 22% of their muscle strength. During the same period of time, human beings confined to bed lose almost 90% of their muscle strength. An eight-year study done by the University of Wyoming found that bears don't move around during hibernation, but they do shiver. Doctors believe that the effect of the shivering could be duplicated in humans through isometric exercises, helping to reduce the amount of muscle loss and reducing the risk of bed sores. Even when they are asleep, we learn from the animals.

Healers Come in Wonderful Packages...
A new study by the Mayo Clinic reports that pet owners with AIDS are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets and a study by the American Geriatric Society found that older citizens with pets were better able to tolerate times of isolation than those without. Animals love us just the way we are.
